H&GHS Meeting Speaker Presentations

June 5, 2024

Dr Julie Collins
Research Fellow and Curator in the Architecture Museum, University of South Australia.

Sleep-outs which were common in South Australian homes during the twentieth century varied in design from enclosed verandahs and the lean-to, to purpose-designed rooms and were intended for sleeping in the fresh air.

This talk traced the design, construction and use of sleep-outs within the context of medical and architectural ideas current at the time, including concepts of what made a healthy home.
