I am holding a letter written April 28, 1943 from my great-uncle, who was stationed near the hospital, home to his sister, my grandmother. In it he states that it was built for his Aunt May by her father (referred to as "Dr", Dr. Burden) upon his retirement from practice. Her parents met on the mission field in inland China; her mother was a nurse midwife who was there with her physician/minister brother the Reverend Doctor James Webster, my great-grandfather. At the time of the letter the hospital was 3 years old, and May also got "maternity training", and was running it with a staff of 12 trained sisters plus the non-clinical staff. I met Aunt May when she came to the states for a visit in the 1970's. She was quite proud of herself for smuggling over biscuits for us by packing them under her undergarments.
I have continued the family tradition, and am a physician as well.
