Mrs Barrett was the owner/operator in the 60s. I worked there and ran the kiosk for a few weeks after she had a stroke. I was 15.

In summer, we rode our bikes home from Grange school so that we could eat cold roast lamb sandwiches made from the bread that had been delivered that morning. Our mother liked the continental loaf, while we preferred the pipe loaf. Best of all were Badenoch’s finger buns – well baked, dense and chewy, dotted with currants, a 1cm strip of vanilla icing snaking along the top over a sugar glaze. Today’s soft, pappy finger buns, with their tops smothered in soft icing under desiccated coconut cannot even compare. Oh for a Badenoch’s finger bun of old!

As a 4-year-old in 1949, I would sometimes walk the 100metres or so from my home on Seaview Road and crawl up the sandy slope to the veranda on the northern side of Beachcroft. My goal was a large, ugly home-made rocking horse set next to the wall of the house. I would climb onto its broad back, and rock vigorously back and forth while struggling to stay on the slippery brown fabric that covered its round barrel like body. After a while, I’d slide off and head down to the beach to watch the seagulls soaring effortlessly on the wind. How I wished I could join them.

Just turn up at the Hall in the Ngutungka Henley Library beore 2.00pm Thursday, sign in and take a seat. There will be a donation jar for non-members to contribute (optional).
